A decade of studying the impact of human activities on the environment led to the foundation of Anglesey E-Waste in 2017. Focussing on computer and I.T. recycling, we continue to help reduce carbon emissions in the UK from Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) year on year, using the most environmentally sound methods. In 2024, we formed a limited company, called North Wales Computer Recycling Ltd (NWCRL).
North Wales Computer Recycling Ltd, established in 2017, provide North Wales businesses and residents with an I.T. recycling solution. We provide a responsible and ethical way to legitimately dispose of I.T. based WEEE. We look to repair and reuse rather than purely to recycle. UK businesses have a legal obligation to dispose of their WEEE to an approved treatment facility such as ours. The environmentally conscious general public also have a moral drive to responsibly recycle their redundant IT. This puts North Wales Computer Recycling Ltd in an ideal position to serve both residential and commercial sectors.
How we work
North Wales Computer Recycling Ltd accept working, broken, damaged or obsolete I.T. for recycling. Each item collected receives assessment for repair/reuse, and we aim to offer as many items as possible back to the public at a fair price. We remove many usable parts from items beyond economical repair, or which are obsolete, and strip most of the equipment down to components for recycling.
By dealing only with UK based companies, we try to keep UK waste a within the country. We process as much as possible at our workshops, before sending components or other items for specialist processing. This processing recovers the raw materials for re-use.
Computer Recycling
Computers and many other electronic components, including servers and laptops, are made out of many recyclable parts. Although North Wales Computer Recycling Ltd repair and reuse as many items as possible, end of life and obsolete computers (etc.) need to be responsibly recycled. As complete units, these items cannot be effectively recycled due to them being made of multiple different materials. Once disassembled, however, the individual parts of a computer can be recycled effectively. Plastics, metals and circuit boards can all be recycled to recover materials used within their manufacture. Re-using materials that have already been processed from their raw form, can be much less environmentally damaging when compared to manufacturing or mining new materials.
Data Erasure and Destruction
Data on a computer, laptop or server is typically stored on a hard drive or an SSD, which gets removed as a priority once the devices are back at NWCRL HQ. We lock all hard drives and SSDs in our safe prior to assessment. If drives are healthy, we erase them to the same methodology as the HMG Infosec 5 standard (used for erasure of UK government classified data) to enable reuse. If drives are unhealthy, we crush them to render data recovery virtually impossible. We issue business clients with a certificate of erasure/crushing once processing is complete.
All modern mobile phones, tablets and even some laptops store their data on a chip soldered onto the main circuit board, which is often not possible to erase for numerous reasons, the most common being that the device is locked with a pin/password and/or an account, or that the device is faulty and therefore cannot be used. As we are unable to erase the data contained upon these devices, they get sent to an end of life facility where we ask that they are dealt with in line with data protection policies, however, we are unable to provide certificates of destruction for them.
WEEE Compliant
North Wales Computer Recycling Ltd, registered with Natural Resources Wales, are certified to treat the WEEE that we accept. Accepted WEEE is transported to our sites for treatment – we hold a higher tier Waste Carrier’s License which permits us to do this. Waste Transfer Notes are issued to clients after collection and contain all relevant license numbers required for compliance.
